Nintendo wants more violent and risque games for the Switch – TrustedReviews
Nintendo has for years kept a rather family friendly image, particularly with the Wii console aimed at bringing people together to play wholesome active games.
And with the launch of the Switch, Nintendo relied on the widespread appeal of the likes of Zelda to see the hybrid console to success. Roll on a few months and we have a Switch release of Mario Kart, the very cute Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Mario Odyssey.
However, Nintendo now looks to be attempting to make the Switch appeal to more adult gamers more used to playing games on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Developers familiar with Nintendo’s plans, according to The Wall Street Journal, noted that games such as Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon, which has scantily clad female characters, and Shinobi Refle: Senran Kargua, which enables players to massage young women in the game, join the likes of Doom and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus to inject some more adult appeal into the Switch line-up.
“Nintendo has opened its window to more developers, and it has gotten much kinder to companies new to Nintendo platforms,” said Takayuki Fujii, the producer of Gal Metal a game about an all-girl high-school band fighting against aliens with the power of heavy metal.
Having such games on a console that has often been aimed for use with families or in social situations, might seem a little jarring against Nintendo’s current high-flying titles. However, Nintendo has always had violent and risque games on its consoles; the SNES has games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, and the N64 had the likes of Perfect Dark and Turok.
Not that Nintendo really needs to broaden its console appeal, as the Switch is still selling very well, and the Mario and Zelda licenses attract both adult and younger gamers alike. Time will tell if more ‘mature’ games will appeal om the Switch or remain more suited to Sony and Microsoft’s consoles.
