I’ve been enjoying Super Mario Run quite a bit, and I didn’t even mind paying 10 bucks for the mobile ‘endless runner’ from Nintendo.

I’m actually glad that the game is premium-priced rather than free-to-play, though I think my colleague Paul Tassi makes some excellent points about how it could have gone the other way, too.

You can read Paul’s piece here, and read why I think the game makes sense as a premium title here. But where Paul and I are both in agreement, I think, is in how Nintendo communicated its premium price-tag with gamers.

The second big mistake?

Making Super Mario Run online-only. It’s a game that’s designed to be played on-the-go, in bite-sized snippets. The kind of game you might play on an airplane or the subway. Making it online only is completely absurd regardless of the justifications, and an unfortunate side-effect of its premium price-tag.
