2017 is almost upon us, and with it another year of video game releases, controversies, and unexpected twists and turns.

I’ve taken some time to list out as many 2017 video game predictions as I could come up with, stopping at 60 because, quite frankly, sometimes it’s just better to stop while you’re ahead.

But enough with introductions! Here’s my list of 60 Predictions For Video Games In 2017:

  1. The next Call of Duty will be futuristic (Advanced Warfare 2) and people will be mad (but it’ll actually be really good.)
  2. Pokemon GO will release a huge Gen 2 update, will still mostly be a subpar, overhyped Pokemon game.
  3. The Nintendo Switch will be really great, but 3rd-party support will fizzle up quickly. Sales will not impress.
  4. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be delayed, but will meet with critical acclaim at launch.
  5. The new Super Mario will be great, but will not fill the void left by Zelda at launch.
  6. Horizon Zero Dawn will be a disappointment, neither great nor terrible.
  7. Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding will keep getting weirder, won’t be called Death Stranding, won’t come out in 2017.
  8. The Last of Us 2, God of War 4 will both get lots more amazing teasers but won’t come out in 2017. Days Gone will. It will be better than expected.
  9. #GamerGate will still be getting blamed for everything, will overreact in response. There will be no reconciliation.
  10. We’ll be bombarded by a bunch of Op/Eds about games make us sexist and violent; none of these will be supported by the data. Some of them will link gamers to Trump.
  11. Virtual Reality will remain a gimmick, though we’ll get a few cool new experiences. Facebook will begin to regret the Oculus purchase.
  12. Nintendo’s mobile games will be more commercially successful than Switch games, but not as good.
  13. Star Citizen will not release, will remain mired in controversy and doubt.
  14. Steam will release more games than it ever has before and most of them will be totally worthless.
  15. A new Elder Scrolls game will be announced, but not before it’s leaked everywhere.
  16. HDR won’t be that big of a deal. It’ll be nice but not very noticeable.
  17. 4K won’t be that big of a deal. It’ll be nice but not very noticeable.
  18. Scorpio will give PlayStation a much-needed run for its money, but won’t close the gap.
  19. A bunch of MMOs will be released and none will survive.
  20. We’ll finally find out what that Star Wars game Amy Hennig is working on is.
  21. Mass Effect: Andromeda will be a lot like Dragon Age: Inquisition. Fun but shallow, critically acclaimed.
  22. Destiny 2 will be announced, but not enough content for Destiny 1 will be released in time.
  23. No Man’s Sky will get more updates, too little too late.
  24. We will get a really major glimpse of CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077 game and it will be so awesome.
  25. All the progress EA made with consumer-friendly Titanfall 2 policies will be undone by poor sales.
  26. China will become an even more crucial market and Chinese game companies will get even bigger.
  27. From Software will tease something in the Souls genre (but not Dark Souls) exclusive to PS4.
  28. The new Skylanders game will allow players to finally make their characters run and double-jump.
  29. Disney will continue to miss a huge opportunity by not making new Star Wars and Marvel games.
  30. Konami will screw the pooch with the Metal Gear franchise.
  31. Half-Life 3 will still not come out, Valve will still continue to not make games.
  32. My video game backlog will continue to grow and grow and I will have no way to combat it. I will eventually submit to the realities of time.
  33. The biggest publishers will just get bigger, and the industry will groan under its own weight.
  34. More powerful consoles will lead to more expensive games, will lead to more risky AAA development.
  35. Ubisoft will be bought out by Vivendi.
  36. A new Assassin’s Creed game will be announced, set in Egypt or Russia, and it will be much better than the last few thanks to taking some time off.
  37. Blizzard will release more amazing Overwatch characters and maps and everything they touch will turn into gold. Pure gold.
  38. We’ll have to endure a bunch of tech blogs proclaiming a bunch of “disruptive” new stuff that won’t be true at all. (See, eg, VR.)
  39. Mobile gaming will continue to grow, will continue to mostly suck, but there will be a few diamonds in the rough.
  40. Kids these days won’t know a good game if it hit them in the face! Get off my lawn!
  41. We will hear more demands for “safe spaces” in virtual reality and gaming writ large. More calls for censorship. Both sides will handle this poorly.
  42. I still won’t understand Minecraft. Minecraft will continue to be “Yuge!”
  43. Gamers will continue to complain about everything and make mountains out of molehills…obviously.
  44. Game journalists will continue to complain that gamers are entitled and vile.
  45. From Software will announce a new Armored Core and I’ll finally get into that franchise.
  46. Persona 5, Nier: Automata, Nioh and a bunch of other Japanese games will be awesome. It will be the year of awesome Japanese video games. This will benefit Sony and Nintendo mostly.
  47. We’ll have one indie game that comes out of nowhere and breaks everybody’s heart (in a good way.)
  48. One major AAA franchise will try something new and surprise everybody (in a good way.)
  49. Most of the remasters will be only so-so and mostly pointless.
  50. Red Dead Redemption 2 will get pushed back to 2018.
  51. Some random controversial nonsense will happen and dominate the gaming news cycle for a month, probably involving sex or Donald Trump (or both!)
  52. Even though the Nintendo Switch isn’t a smash hit, it will have some of the best games of 2017.
  53. The PS4 will reach the 65 million units sold mark, while Xbox lags far behind.
  54. Games will continue to cost $60 even though that isn’t keeping up with inflation so we’ll get lots of annoying monetization efforts like micro-transactions and lame DLC.
  55. We’ll learn more about Scorpio at E3.
  56. Sony will continue to dominate VR with its cheaper headset and more plentiful game catalog; Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will struggle.
  57. Mobile VR will take off, but more as a way for phone manufacturers to sell phones than anything substantial.
  58. Crytek will continue to struggle, possibly getting bought up by a bigger fish.
  59. Some big announcements will drop: Halo 6, Devil May Cry 5, Borderlands 3…many others….
  60. 2017 will be another awesome year for gaming in spite of all the other silly, cynical stuff.

Okay, I could probably keep going and going with this, but sixty seems like a reasonable number to stop at for now. If you have more predictions that you’d like to share, shout out in the comments or on Twitter and Facebook. Any good ones I’ll add to the list.

As always, thanks so much for reading and talking about games with me. It really means a lot. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May this one be better than the last!
